First Disney Cruise Guide: Tips, Booking Windows and Mistakes to Avoid

A Disney cruise rewards planning more than any other line. Activity reservations, adult dining and character experiences open on a schedule, and the best options go fast. Here’s how to get it right the first time.

Booking windows

Once you’ve booked, you can make online reservations for Palo and Enchanté, excursions, spa treatments and nursery hours. The windows open by loyalty level: Concierge guests first, then Platinum, Gold and Silver Castaway Club members, then first-timers. As a first-timer, be online the moment your window opens.

Before you sail

  • Download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for the schedule, onboard chat and check-in.
  • Complete online check-in early. An earlier check-in can mean an earlier port arrival time.
  • Register kids for the Oceaneer Club online.
  • Plan Pirate Night (bring pirate gear) and any themed nights, such as a “dress up” night or Marvel Day at Sea on select sailings.

Embarkation day

Lunch is served onboard. Cabins usually open early afternoon. The sail-away deck party is a must, so find a spot on the pool deck early.

Rotational dining

You’ll rotate through the ship’s main restaurants, each with a theme and some with a show. Your servers rotate with you and learn your family’s preferences. Choose early or late seating; families with young kids usually pick early.

Dress code

Casual by day. Dress-up nights are optional. Many families coordinate outfits for photos, and princess and pirate costumes are welcome.

First-timer mistakes

  1. Waiting to book. Disney sailings sell out and rarely discount.
  2. Missing your reservation window for adult dining and excursions.
  3. Skipping the private-island day. It’s often a highlight.
  4. Not packing Pirate Night gear.
  5. Not budgeting for alcohol, since there’s no drink package.
