Ship Excursions vs. Independent Tours
Ship-sold excursions cost more, but the ship waits if the tour runs late and the cruise line vets the operator. They’re the safer choice for long or far-away tours, tendered ports and first-time cruisers.

Do it yourself. Many Caribbean beaches are a short taxi ride from the pier. Agree on the fare before you get in, and confirm whether it’s per person or per car.
How to Pick the Right Excursion
- Match the activity level. Excursions are rated by activity level; check for steps, swimming ability and age limits.
- Watch the clock. A 9-hour port day minus tender time and lunch leaves less than you think.
- Book popular tours early. Stingray City, Dunn’s River Falls and catamaran sails often sell out before sailing.
- Check cancellation terms. Most ship excursions are refundable until about 48 hours before; see are cruise excursions refundable?
