First Time on Norwegian Cruise Line? Freestyle Cruising Explained

Norwegian built its brand on Freestyle Cruising: eat when you want, wear what you want, and skip the formal nights. That makes it one of the easiest lines for first-timers. Here’s how it works.

Before you sail

  • Download the NCL app for check-in, reservations, the daily schedule and onboard chat.
  • Finish online check-in and pick an arrival time.
  • Choose your More at Sea options at least 24 hours before sailing. They can’t be changed onboard.
  • Reserve specialty dining and shows such as Six, Beetlejuice or Jersey Boys (varies by ship) early.

Dining: no assigned tables

There are no set seatings. Walk into the main dining rooms whenever they’re open, or reserve a time. Free options include the main dining rooms, the Garden Café buffet, O’Sheehan’s pub (open late) and casual venues. Specialty restaurants such as Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro and Teppanyaki cost extra but are partly covered by More at Sea.

Dress code

Resort casual at all times. There are no formal nights, though an optional “Dress Up or Not” night appears on some longer sailings.

What’s included

  • Main dining rooms, the buffet and casual venues
  • Broadway and original shows, comedy and live music
  • Pools, water slides and the Splash Academy kids’ club
  • More at Sea perks when they’re in your fare (see More at Sea explained)

What costs extra

  • Some attractions (go-karts, laser tag on some ships)
  • Spa and Thermal Suite access
  • Specialty dining beyond your More at Sea allowance
  • Daily service charges, unless prepaid or included in a promotion

Embarkation tips

Pack a carry-on with swimsuits and medications. Lunch is available onboard right away. On Boston sailings, arrive in your assigned window and have your documents ready. The Flynn Cruiseport is compact and moves quickly.

Five first-timer tips

  1. Book shows and Teppanyaki before boarding.
  2. Use the Waterfront venues on Breakaway-class ships for outdoor dinners.
  3. Bring a refillable water bottle, since bottled water isn’t in the drink package.
  4. Check the 15-drink daily cap if you’re a heavy drinker.
  5. Buy Thermal Suite passes early. They sell out.
