Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is MSC’s private island in the Bahamas, about 65 miles from Miami. It’s a former industrial sand-mining site that MSC restored into a marine reserve. Today it’s known for some of the clearest water and whitest sand of any cruise line island.
Why it’s different
- Eight beaches with plenty of space, even on busy days
- Marine conservation focus, with a coral restoration program and an active reserve around the island
- Late stays: many sailings stay into the evening for the island’s Lighthouse light show and beach parties
- Docking: ships dock at a pier, so there’s no tendering
What’s free
- Beaches, loungers and swimming lagoons
- Island dining venues with complimentary food
- The evening Lighthouse show and beach events
- Walking and biking paths (bike rentals may cost extra)
What costs extra
- Cabanas and beach villas
- Snorkel tours, kayaks and paddleboards
- Spa treatments
- Drinks, unless you have a drink package
Drinks
MSC’s Premium Extra and Alcohol-Free packages work on Ocean Cay. That’s an advantage over Carnival, whose packages don’t cover its private islands. The island menu may be smaller than onboard.
How to plan the day
- Go ashore early and walk past the first beach for more space.
- Book a cabana in advance if you want shade.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The reserve’s coral depends on it.
- Stay for sunset and the Lighthouse show if your ship stays late.
