Things to Do in Freeport, Grand Bahama
Fewer crowds than Nassau, more nature — here’s how to spend a port day in Freeport.
Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island, trades Nassau’s bustle for a slower pace: national parks, quiet beaches, and a more local feel. It’s a good pick for cruisers who want nature and relaxation over shopping and nightlife.
Lucayan National Park
Home to one of the world’s longest underwater cave systems, plus boardwalk trails through mangroves to Gold Rock Beach.
Gold Rock Beach
A wide, uncrowded beach made famous in film for its dramatic low-tide sandbars — roughly a 30-40 minute drive from the port.
Garden of the Groves
A lush botanical garden with waterfalls, walking trails, and a small chapel — a relaxed half-day option close to town.
Port Lucaya Marketplace
Shops, restaurants, and a straw market a short taxi ride from the pier, good for a quick shopping stop.
UNEXSO
The Underwater Explorers Society offers dolphin encounters and reef diving/snorkeling trips right near the port.

Getting Around
Freeport’s cruise terminal sits in an industrial harbor, so you’ll need a taxi or tour to reach beaches and Port Lucaya. Taxis wait at the terminal; confirm per-person fares before leaving. Carnival’s Celebration Key destination is also on Grand Bahama, so some itineraries stop there instead of the main port.
Sample Port Day Plans
- Easy beach day: taxi to Taino Beach, lunch at a beach shack, back to the ship by mid-afternoon.
- Nature lover: Lucayan National Park tour with kayaking, then a quick stop at Gold Rock Beach.
- Families: glass-bottom boat or snorkel trip in the morning, then Port Lucaya for lunch and shopping.
