Norwegian Cruise Line Ships Ranked: Every Class Explained (2027)

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) pioneered “Freestyle Cruising,” with no fixed dining times and no formal nights. Its ships range from brand-new Prima-class vessels to mid-size ships built for Hawaii and Europe. Here’s how the fleet breaks down.

Prima Class: the newest and most refined

Ships: Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.

The Prima-class ships have more space per guest, Ocean Boulevard (an outdoor walkway wrapping the ship), Indulge Food Hall, the Haven suite complex and headline attractions such as the Prima Speedway go-karts and dry slides. Aqua and Luna are slightly larger and add the Aqua Slidecoaster.

Best for: couples and families who want a modern ship without Icon-class crowds.

Breakaway Plus Class: big-ship energy

Ships: Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore.

Known for go-kart tracks, laser tag, large aqua parks and Broadway shows. Bliss and Encore are favorites for Alaska thanks to their observation lounges.

Best for: families with teens and travelers who want nightlife.

Breakaway Class: the Northeast workhorses

Ships: Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway.

These ships introduced The Waterfront, an outdoor dining promenade. Norwegian Breakaway sails weekly Canada and New England cruises from Boston through fall 2027, the easiest NCL option for New Englanders.

Best for: value-minded travelers sailing from the Northeast.

Epic, Jewel and older classes

Epic: Norwegian Epic. Jewel class: Norwegian Jewel, Jade, Pearl and Gem. Older ships: Norwegian Dawn, Star, Sun, Spirit and Sky.

These smaller and mid-size ships sail longer, port-intensive itineraries in Europe, Asia, South America and the Southern Caribbean, as well as Bermuda and Canada runs. They have fewer attractions, more destination focus and often the best per-night pricing.

Best for: destination-focused travelers and longer voyages.

Pride of America: Hawaii’s only year-round inter-island ship

Pride of America is U.S.-flagged, so it can sail a 7-night loop around four Hawaiian islands without a foreign port. It’s the most convenient way to see multiple islands without island-hopping flights. Note that More at Sea benefits work differently on this ship.
