Royal Caribbean Ships Ranked: Every Class Explained (2027)

Royal Caribbean runs one of the biggest and most varied fleets at sea, and the ship you pick shapes your trip more than the itinerary does. A 3-night getaway on a Voyager-class ship and a week on Icon of the Seas are completely different vacations. Here is how the fleet breaks down, class by class, and who each one suits best.

Icon Class: the biggest ships in the world

Ships: Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, Legend of the Seas (2026), Hero of the Seas (2027).

Icon-class ships are built around neighborhoods: Surfside for young families, Thrill Island with the largest waterpark at sea, the AquaDome with its waterfall and AquaTheater, and Chill Island with multiple pools. Legend of the Seas launched in Europe in summer 2026 before heading to Fort Lauderdale. Starting August 2027, Icon of the Seas moves to Galveston.

Best for: multigenerational families and anyone who wants the newest everything. Trade-off: highest fares, and the ships are crowded on sea days.

Oasis Class: the proven crowd-pleasers

Ships: Oasis, Allure, Harmony, Symphony, Wonder and Utopia of the Seas.

These ships have seven neighborhoods, including Central Park, the Boardwalk and the AquaTheater, along with Broadway-style shows, FlowRiders and zip lines. Oasis-class ships usually price well below Icon-class while delivering about 80% of the experience. Oasis of the Seas sails from Cape Liberty, New Jersey in 2027–28, which makes it the easiest big-ship option for New Englanders.

Best for: first-timers who want a “wow” ship without Icon pricing.

Quantum Class: big ship, easier layout

Ships: Quantum, Anthem, Ovation, Odyssey and Spectrum of the Seas.

Quantum-class ships feature North Star (a glass observation capsule), RipCord by iFLY skydiving, bumper cars in SeaPlex and Two70’s multimedia shows. The indoor spaces make them a good choice for cooler or mixed-weather itineraries. Odyssey of the Seas sails 7- to 12-night Caribbean cruises from Cape Liberty.

Best for: couples and families who want activities without Oasis-level crowds.

Freedom and Voyager Classes: value with the classics

Freedom: Freedom, Liberty and Independence of the Seas. Voyager: Voyager, Explorer, Adventure, Navigator and Mariner of the Seas.

Both classes have the Royal Promenade, ice skating and FlowRider on most ships, and many have been “amplified” with waterslides and new dining. Independence of the Seas sails from Cape Liberty in 2027–28.

Best for: budget-conscious families and short getaways.

Radiance and Vision Classes: smaller ships, better itineraries

Radiance: Radiance, Brilliance, Serenade and Jewel of the Seas. Vision: Grandeur, Rhapsody, Enchantment and Vision of the Seas.

These ships have fewer attractions, lots of glass and ocean views, and they reach ports the mega-ships can’t. They’re the go-to ships for Alaska, longer Southern Caribbean routes and repositioning cruises. Vision of the Seas sails Bahamas and Bermuda cruises from Baltimore.

Best for: travelers who care more about the destination than the ship.
