First Time on Carnival? What to Expect, Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

Carnival is the “Fun Ship” line: casual, energetic and affordable. That makes it a natural first cruise. Here’s what to know before you go.

Before you sail

  • Download the Carnival HUB app for check-in, the daily schedule, onboard chat (small fee) and food ordering on some ships.
  • Check in online, choose an arrival time and upload your photo.
  • Faster to the Fun (FTTF) is a paid priority boarding upgrade that gets you on first and gives early cabin access. It sells out on busy sailings.
  • Carnival’s loyalty program transitioned to Carnival Rewards on September 1, 2026, with redeemable points.

Dining

Choose early or late assigned dining, or Your Time Dining for flexibility. Free favorites include Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina burritos and tacos, and the pizza station, which is open 24 hours on most ships. Room service has a basic free continental breakfast, with other items for a fee.

Dress code

Casual during the day. “Cruise Elegant” nights (one or two per week) are optional dress-up nights, and a nice shirt or dress is plenty.

What’s included

  • Main dining room, Lido buffet, Guy’s, BlueIguana and pizza
  • Playlist Productions shows, the Punchliner Comedy Club and live music
  • WaterWorks slides, pools and the Serenity adult retreat
  • Camp Ocean kids’ club (ages 2–11), Circle “C” (12–14) and Club O2 (15–17)

What costs extra

Money onboard

Your Sail & Sign card is your room key and charge card. Link a credit card at check-in.

First-timer mistakes

  1. Flying in on sail day. Arrive the day before.
  2. Buying CHEERS! without checking whether your itinerary has a private-island day.
  3. Not booking a cabin away from the Lido deck.
  4. Skipping travel insurance.
  5. Not booking through an advisor who watches for price drops.

FAQ

Is Carnival good for adults without kids?

Yes. Serenity adult retreats and comedy clubs keep adults happy. Avoid school holidays if you want quieter ships.

Do I need a passport for a Carnival cruise?

Not on closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports, though it’s strongly recommended.
