Halifax Citadel, Nova Scotia

Port day, June 9, 2026. Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is one of the easiest and best shore days in Canada and New England. It is about a 20 minute uphill walk from the cruise terminal, with costumed Highlanders, a noon gun, barracks rooms and an army museum inside the walls. These 49 photos show what you can see in a few hours ashore.

Ramparts & Parade Square

The star-shaped fort sits on the hill above Halifax harbour, a short walk from the cruise pier.

Barracks Life

Rooms set up the way soldiers lived and worked here in the 1860s.

Tunnels & Passages

Narrow stone passages that run through the outer defences.

Inside the Army Museum

Maps, models and weapons that tell the story of the Citadel and Halifax at war.

Tips for Visiting Halifax Citadel on a Cruise

  • Getting there: walk up Citadel Hill from the waterfront in about 20 to 25 minutes, or take a short taxi ride if you would rather skip the climb.
  • Time it for noon: the Noon Gun is fired from the ramparts every day, so plan to be inside the walls just before 12.
  • Allow two hours: that covers the parade square, the barracks rooms, the tunnels and the Army Museum without rushing.
  • Dress for wind: the hilltop is exposed and often cool, even in summer.
  • Check before you go: it is a Parks Canada site, so confirm opening hours and admission for your port date on the Parks Canada website.
