Halifax Waterfront, Nova Scotia
Port day, June 9, 2026. The Halifax Waterfront starts right where the cruise ships dock, so it is the easiest shore day in Halifax. Walk the harbourfront boardwalk, find the famous bent lampposts, stop at the waterfront monuments and finish with a tour and a pint at Alexander Keith’s Brewery. These 25 photos show what you can see in a few hours ashore.
Boardwalk & Bent Lampposts
The harbourfront boardwalk starts right at the cruise terminal and runs north past wharves, shops and patios. Look for the bent lamppost sculptures, Fountain and Get Drunk, Fall Down, by artists Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg.

Waterfront Monuments
Bronze statues along the south end of the boardwalk, a short stroll from the cruise pier and Pier 21.

Alexander Keith’s Brewery
One block up from the boardwalk on Lower Water Street. The tour ends in the old stone aging cellar, now a pub with live music and beer straight from the barrel.

The Brewery Parlour Rooms
Wood-panelled rooms with leather chairs, oil lamps and a big stone fireplace, set up like the brewer’s own house.

Tips for Visiting the Halifax Waterfront on a Cruise
- Start at the ship: cruise ships dock at the south end of the waterfront, so the boardwalk begins at the terminal. The Emigrant and The Volunteers statues are only a few minutes’ walk away.
- Walk the boardwalk: it is flat and runs along the harbour for a few kilometres, so you can see the lampposts, wharves and shops at your own pace.
- Book the brewery tour: Alexander Keith’s Brewery is on Lower Water Street, about 15 minutes on foot from the cruise pier. Tours run at set times, so reserve ahead on a busy ship day.
- Bring ID: the drinking age in Nova Scotia is 19, and non-alcoholic options are available on the tour.
- Combine it with the Citadel: the waterfront pairs well with a morning at Halifax Citadel, about a 20 minute uphill walk away.
- Pack a layer: the harbour breeze can be cool, even in summer.
