Before You Go

  • Confirm full vs. partial transit before booking — see our dedicated guide.
  • Full transits require flying into one coast and out of another; book flights only after your cruise is confirmed.

Transit Day

  • Arrive on deck early for good viewing spots at the locks — they fill up fast.
  • Onboard narration typically explains the lock mechanism and canal history in real time.

Before You Book

  • Confirm the transit type. Partial and full transits are very different trips. See full vs. partial transit.
  • Check which locks you’ll use. Larger ships use the newer, wider locks; smaller ships like Coral and Island Princess use the historic locks.
  • Plan flights early. One-way transits need open-jaw flights; price cruise and air together.
  • Get travel insurance. Long, multi-country trips are where it pays off most.

On Transit Day

  • Wake up before dawn; ships usually approach the first locks early in the morning.
  • Stake out a spot at the bow, on the promenade deck or at the stern; each offers a different view of the locks.
  • Many ships open the forward helipad or bow for guests and play live commentary.
  • Stay hydrated and use sunscreen; you may spend hours outside in tropical heat.
  • Watch the “mules,” electric locomotives that guide the ship through the lock chambers.
  • Order room service breakfast to your balcony if you have one.

Onboard Tips for a Long Voyage

  • Lots of sea days mean enrichment talks, classes and spa time; check the daily schedule.
  • Use the laundry service midway to pack lighter.
  • Pace your excursions; you don’t need a tour in every port.

Port Tips

  • Carry U.S. dollars; Panama uses the dollar, and it’s widely accepted elsewhere on the route.
  • Book long inland tours, like Antigua Guatemala, through the ship.
  • Pack insect repellent for rainforest excursions.
