Do Cruise Advisors Charge Planning Fees? Why We Don’t

the cruise hq refundable cruise planning fee explained

Some travel advisors charge a planning or consulting fee before they book a trip. Others, including The Cruise HQ, charge nothing at all. If you are comparing agencies, it helps to know how these fees work, what a fair one looks like, and why we chose not to charge one.

How cruise advisors get paid

Cruise lines pay travel agencies a commission on the cruise fare. That commission is built into the price the cruise line sets, so you pay the same base fare whether you book direct or through an advisor. This is why most cruise-focused agencies can work without charging clients a separate fee.

Why some advisors charge a planning fee

  • Complex trips. Multi-country land tours, custom itineraries or trips that are mostly hotels and flights can take many hours of work and earn little commission.
  • Protecting their time. A fee, sometimes credited back when you book, discourages people from collecting free research and booking elsewhere.
  • Specialist consulting. Some advisors sell expertise itself, such as detailed destination planning, separately from booking.

A refundable planning fee is usually credited toward your trip or returned once you book. A consulting fee is typically non-refundable and pays for the planning work itself.

What a fair fee looks like

  • It is disclosed in writing before any work starts.
  • You know exactly what it covers and whether it is refundable or credited.
  • It reflects real extra work, not a standard cruise booking.

Be cautious if a fee appears after the fact, is not explained clearly, or is charged on a simple cruise-only booking.

Why The Cruise HQ does not charge planning fees

We are a cruise-focused agency in New Hampshire, and cruise bookings are what we do every day. The cruise lines’ commission covers our time, so you never pay us to compare lines, quote sailings, apply promotions, request re-pricing when fares drop before final payment, or help you during your trip. You pay the cruise line’s price and nothing extra to us.
